The New Frontiers of EU Information and Cultural Industry

Connact Media is organised in cooperation with the European Parliament, and fuels the debate on the competitiveness of the European media industry.

From the spread of the Internet in the 1990s to the latest developments in artificial intelligence, the media sector has experienced several epoch-making changes in just a few decades. Maintaining the EU’s strategic autonomy in these areas is also vital to defend European values, and the European Democracy Shield initiative also aims to do this. How can the resilience of the EU cultural industry be guaranteed? As they are implemented, can the Media freedom act, the AI act and the Digital Market act defend the freedom of the press and freedom of expression, protect the plurality of voices and the independence of journalistic work, ensure development of the media industry and its ability to withstand global competition with large online platforms? Are copyright protection regulations and those on state aid adequate for the new challenges facing the media?
